Jolly Phonics

Jolly Phonics is a synthetic phonics programme designed to teach children to read and write. Children learn the 42 letter sounds of the English language and they learn how to blend and segment those sounds to read and spell words.

The programme uses songs, rhymes, actions and story to help the children learn the sounds. Parents and carers can help at home by practising the sounds regularly and helping children to read words independently. They will start with small words, often called ‘CVC’ words – they have a consonant, vowel and consonant format, e.g. cat, run, frog, etc. and build a wider bank of words, including some ‘tricky’ words which are irregular and cannot always be ‘sounded out’.
